Editing & Proofreading
In addition to copywriting and directing copy teams, I’m also an eagle-eyed editor and grammar geek dedicated to 100% error-free messaging.
Prior to my advertising career, I got my start as a full-time and freelance editor for a wide range of magazines, newspapers, book publishers and private clients. I have edited almost every type of writing—nonfiction, fiction, poetry and scripts as well as business, academic, legal and marketing copy—and my shelves are lined with more than a dozen dog-eared stylebooks including Associated Press, Chicago and New York Times as well as legal, medical, academic and in-house guides. I’ve also written bespoke brand voice and style guides for clients including Levi’s, the Princeton Review and the Home Depot.
Literary Editor
As the Literary Editor at A&U magazine from 2011 to 2015, I sought out and published work by writers from Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and North America. In 2013, I founded the Christopher Hewitt Awards for literary work in fiction, poetry and drama addressing HIV/AIDS.
In 2011, I served as guest editor for the San Francisco Bay Area edition of the poetry journal Locuspoint. The issue featured new poetry by Brenda Hillman, Marcelo Hernandez Castillo and Brian Teare and touched on themes including immigration, race, gender identity, disability and aging.
I was also the Editor for the Spring 2012 issue of the literary journal Assaracus, and I was an Associate Editor at Lambda Literary from 2008 to 2014.
I am a member of the National Book Critics Circle and have been a judge for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Publishing Triangle Award in Poetry and the Lambda Literary Award in both Poetry and YA Fiction.
K-12 Editor
I have worked as an editor for several K-12 educational publishers including the Princeton Review in New York as well as WestEd and Pearson North America in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2005, I facilitated diversity/DEI and content review workshops with educators, testing specialists and community leaders for the Kansas State Department of Education in Topeka at the height of the “Intelligent Design” debates.
Print Editor
I have edited books and newspapers throughout my career, starting at the age of 17 as the founding editor of InsideOUT, the first nationally distributed magazine for LGBTQ youth in the United States.
I have also worked as an editor at the East Bay Express, Passport magazine and Ogilvy Advertising; and I have edited books for private clients, helping authors revise and polish their manuscripts for publication.
